Research and Planning: Genre Research

This is my first post on my new A2 Media Blog. I will be looking at four different genre types and analysing the stereotypes of them as well as looking at the conventional: editing, mise-en-scene, sound and cinematography.

Horror: This horror is quite conventional and is very fast paced as well as having an intriguing storyline.
Editing - in this film there are a lot of jump cuts throughout and this is shown a lot when characters are watching the video of 'the ring'.
Mise-en-scene -  There are a great deal of props and locations in this film and there is a use of technology which creates suspense when the girl comes out of the well on the tv screen and into the real world where the characters are - blurring lines of reality.
Sound - the main sounds in this film are that of locations e.g. when Rachel is on the ship and there are waves crashing everywhere, creating tension. There is also the sound of the fly buzzing through all shots shown on the video, which makes the audience aware this is a key sound.
Cinematography - There are a lot of many shots in this film the main ones being long shots to show far away the girl in the well is the close ups of when she's right in front of the characters face.

Action: This is definitely identifiable as an action movie as there are many well known actors and actresses and this is common of this genre. There is also use of violence and the there are the usual heroes and villains.
Editing - This film is very fast paced with jump cuts showing the action happening all very fast this is because there is so much happening that there isn't time for long scenes.
Mise-en-scene - As this is an action movie the props used are the usual guns, other weapons, cash and fast black cars.
Sound - The sound is typical for an action film e.g. sound of bullets, conversation, fast soundtracks designed to keep up with jump cuts.
Cinematography  - Shots in this film are typical consisting of low angles and high angles for when characters are in danger.

Fantasy: This is quite obviously a fantasy genre as it is based around magic with wizards, witches and other mythical creatures.
Editing: This film is shown at a leisurely pace and out of all the other films has more of Todorov's Theory  as there is the equilibrium at the beginning, may peaks and troughs, the climax and the then the new equilibrium.
Mise-en-scene - In this film there are a great deal of props Hogwarts school being one of them, then there are the use of the costumes of all students and teachers.
Sound - As this is one of eight films there is one soundtrack that is played throughout every film it is usually on the credits and usually played on troughs rather than peaks, there are also many sound effects from the magic used.
Cinematography - The shots in this are like that of an action movie with high/low angles, close ups of Voldemort and long shots of the action in the last three tasks to reach the mirror.
Romantic Comedy: This is a typical romantic comedy with eye level shots and close ups. There is the typical storyline of Bridget Jones falling in and out of love.
Editing - In this film as it is a rom -com there are many straight cuts and POV shots.
Mise-en-scene - In this film the locations are the main props e.g. the holiday location and the conference rooms. The pregnancy test is also a main prop as this is when Bridget and Mark separate.
Sound - in this film there are many soundtracks done my artists of the charts e.g. Robbie Williams - Misunderstood and Jamelia - Stop.
Cinematography - The main shots in this movie are eye level shots, close ups, two shots, medium shots and long shots.
